34 Arrested In A Joint Operation Against Illegal Gambling Activities
The Police have arrested 34 men, aged between 17 and 49, during a joint operation against illegal gambling conducted by Bedok Police Division and the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority along Lorong 13 Geylang on 7 April 2019.
During the operation, cash amounting to approximately $6000 and gambling paraphernalia were seized. A 34-year-old man was also arrested for offences under the Immigration Act.
Five men will be charged in court on 9 April 2019 under the Common Gaming Houses Act. The 34-year-old man will also be charged under the Immigration Act. Investigations against the remaining men are ongoing.
Under the Common Gaming Houses Act, any person found being the owner or occupier of a property, keeps or uses it as a common gaming house shall be liable to a fine of not less than $5,000 and not more than $50,000, and imprisonment of a term not exceeding 3 years. Any person caught gaming in a common gaming house shall be liable on conviction to a fine not exceeding $5,000 or to imprisonment not exceeding 6 months or to both.
Under the Immigration Act (Cap 133), the penalties for overstaying or illegal entry are a jail term of up to six months plus a minimum of three strokes of the cane.
The Police will continue to take tough enforcement action against those who are involved in illegal gambling activities and ensure that they are dealt with in accordance with the law.
