5 things to know about Indian Institute of Skills, PM Narendra Modi’s Kanpur visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone of the country’s first ever Indian Institute of Skills in Kanpur today. Ahead of the Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the PM will also launch a number of programmes for promoting skill development among the youth of the country. At the event, the PM would felicitate skilled candidates who have been trained under Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana. The PM will distribute skill certificates to Street Food Vendors, Leather industry Workers under the recognition of prior learning program of the government.

Here we take a look at five highlights of PM Modi’s Kanpur visit today.

1. Indian Institute of Skills conceptualised by PM Modi

According to a PIB release, the Indian Institute of Skills was conceptualised by PM Modi during his visit to Singapore’s Institute of Technical Education. The first of its kind institute will be set up by the Union Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in partnership with the Institute of Technical Education, Singapore. Inspired by the Singapore model of training, the institute would also adopt various best practices from the country. The Union ministry plans to set up six such institutes across the country.

2. National Apprentice Promotion Scheme

PM Modi would also announce the National Apprentice Promotion Scheme in Uttar Pradesh. The state government will have a major role in the successful implementation of the scheme. According to PIB, 23000 private companies are engaging in apprenticeship across the country at present. The MSDE aims to encourage state government support to engage more corporates on apprenticeship trainings. In the financial year target for 2016-17, the government wants to ensure enrollment of at least 5 lakh apprentices across the country.

3. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras (PMKKs)

The Prime Minister will also launch Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendras (PMKKs). MSDE plans to open one Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) in each district of the country to create career opportunities for the youth. The PM will announce the launch of 31 PMKKs at the event on Monday. PMKKs would be state-of-the-art skill development centres with modern infrastructure to facilitate skill trainings in the country.

4. Drivers’ Training Institutes

The Prime Minister will also announce the launch of Drivers’ Training Institutes. The institutes will train aspiring drivers. With the expanding market of digital cab companies like Ola and Uber, the demand for skilled drivers is expected to rise in the coming years.

5. Skill exhibition, industry partnership for employment to youth

PM Modi will also inaugurate the Kaushal Pradarshini (Skill Exhibition) for the youth of Uttar Pradesh. The exhibition would showcase vocational training practices across different sectors. It will be open for public at Railway Grounds, Kanpur between December 19-22. The event would also witness strategic partnership with various industries that will train and employ approximate 4 lakh youth over the next 3 years.
