Lagos State’s Commissioner for Employment/ Wealth Creation, Babatunde Durosinmi-Etti, has said that 50 fashion entrepreneurs in the State will be trained by Ruff ‘n’ Tumble Nigeria, a Lagos based clothing company.
This is even as Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, LSETF, has rolled out ‘Lagos Innovates’, a series of programs designed for the benefit of technology- and innovation-driven startups in the State.
Speaking at an event organised by the General Electric in Lagos, Durosinmi-Etti said that the ministry has also undertaken a number of initiatives such as the Graduate Internship Program, wave employability skills training, open Andela, and partnership with General Electric, PLASOCN/ painters association, Street Foundation, Job Centers and Betti- O Foundation.
According to him, these initiatives and more are to ensure that skills training support the upward trajectory of economic growth in the state to serve opportunities arising out of Lekki Free Trade Zone, increasing number of startups and innovation-driven companies coming up.
Regarding ‘Lagos Innovates’, Akintunde Oyebode, Executive Secretary of LSETF, explained that the concept was drawn from the experience and successes of similar government-led initiatives like Startup Chile, Startup India and Startup Singapore.
He stated: “Lagos has perhaps the most exciting startup ecosystem of any city in Africa. The investment case is clear and driven primarily by the size of the market and accessibility as an entry-point for Nigeria and a springboard for the rest of West Africa.
“If we get our model for innovation-driven enterprises right, Lagos State has the potential to exponentially increase opportunities and jobs for its residents in the medium- to long-term.”
