Baniqued, Borlain dominate Alaska IronKids – Sunday, 07 August 2016
LAPU-LAPU City — Wacky Baniqued and Tara Borlain lived up to expectations and romped off with the top plums in the 13-14 category in the Alaska IronKids Triathlon II yesterday at Shangri-La’s Mactan and Resort here.
Fresh from his silver medal output in the Super Sprint division of the Singapore International Triathlon, Baniqued showed his fine form and finished the race in 44:49 to bag his third crown in this year’s Alaska IronKids season.
Joe Bernard Sarmiento (45:42) and Jose Mauel Arao (45:49) settled for runner-up honors in the culminating race of the series sponsored by Alaska Milk.
Borlain covered the course in 46:57 to beat elder sister Samantha for the tiara by 26 seconds in the distaff side. Karen Andreas Manayon (47:14) took third while Everlie Janarie Macalalad, who was coming off a bronze in Singapore, missed a podium finish with 48:18.
The youngest of the Borlian sisters, Franchezka, reigned in the girls’ 6-8 with 15:34.
Joining the honor roll were Matthew Justine Hermosa (26:27) and Kira Ellis (29:36) in 9-10; Hyonde Keum (35:45) and Catherine Angeli Yu (36:14) in 11-12, and Connor Hodges (15:39) in Boys’ 6-8.
Meanwhile, Australian Tim Reed and Swiss Caroline Steffen declared readiness to take on the challenge of determined rivals in the Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 firing off today (Sunday) at Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort and Spa.
Reed braces for a tough battle with challengers led by the two podium finishers last time, runner-up Tim Van Berkel and Brent McMahon of Canada, as well as legendary two-time Ironman 70.3 kingpin Craig Alexander and Sam Betten.
Steffen defends the women’s plum against a tough cast led by Aussies Dimity Lee-Duke and Kathryn Haesner, Russian Radka Vodickova, Kiwi Amelia Watkinson and Aussie Sarah Crowley.
