Chelsea superior to AS Roma: Rudiger
LONDON: English football club Chelsea’s new signing Antonio Rudiger said on Sunday that the Stamford Bridge side is levels above his ex-club AS Roma.
Rudiger, who was part of Germany’s young Confederations Cup 2017 winning squad, joined the London club from Roma for a reported £34 million this month.
Talking to a pre-season press conference in Japan, Rudiger credited coach Antonio Conte for being a major reason in his move to London, also claiming that his new club is superior to Roma.
“Roma is a big club too, in Italy, but I think Chelsea is a different level and of course the biggest reason [for his move] was the coach, Antonio Conte,” said the 24-year-old.
Lauding Chelsea’s boss, the young German said that he had heard a lot of positive things about Conte from his team-mates at Roma, and credited the coach for bringing success and stability to clubs the Italian has managed.
“I spoke with a couple of my team-mates and they told me a lot about Antonio Conte. You saw it last season, in the seasons before at Juventus and with Italy as national coach,” he said.
He also highlighted Conte’s ability to transform players and says that he is looking forward to develop as a footballer under the 47-year-old’s influence.
“He is a fantastic coach because he has improved a lot of players. That’s why I thought, ‘I want to be part of that,” he said.
Chelsea get their pre-season under way on July 22 against arch-rivals Arsenal in Beijing, playing another couple of games against Bayern Munich on July 25 and Inter Milan on July 29 in Singapore.
