Air NZ beat out trans-Tasman neighbours Qantas Airways, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific Airways, Virgin Australia, British Airways, Etihad Airways, All Nippon Airways, Eva Air and Lufthansa.

The awards, which are the industry’s most sought  after and prized, are judged according to “leadership and airlines that innovate to make a real difference to the passenger experience particularly in economy class.”

Judges noted Air New Zealand’s commitment to environmental leadership, innovation  and renewing its fleet, alongside a stunning financial result with a record profit of over $600m posted earlier this year.

“In our objective analysis Air New Zealand came out number one in virtually all of our audit criteria, which is an exceptional performance,” said AirlineRatings.com editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas.

Air NZ also took out top prize for the best premium economy class while Etihad was recognised for its first class cabin and Singapore Airlines for economy.
