Ex-Ctg mayor ABM Mohiuddin dies
Former Chittagong City Corporation mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury died around 3am Friday at Max Hospital in Mehedibag area of the port city. He was 73.
Dr Md Liakat Ali Khan, managing director of Max Hospital, confirmed the death of the veteran Awami League leader.
While talking to the reporters at Max Hospital, Mohiuddin’s son Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel, said: “My father is loved by the people of Chittagong. He wanted to return to Chittagong when his health condition improves and that is why he was brought to Chittagong.”
“He suffered a cardiac arrest after being taken to the hospital. Initially he was taken to the Intensive Care Unit and later he was kept on life support,” he said adding that the device was removed when he did not respond.
Mohiuddin left behind two sons, two daughters, wife, and host of relatives, friends and well-wishers to mourn his death.
Mohiuddin Chowdhury returned to Chittagong from Singapore’s Gleneagles Hospital on December 12 after undergoing an angiogram and later two rings were set up in his heart.
On Thursday, he was taken to Max Hospital for dialysis, but his condition deteriorated and he was put on life support at the intensive care unit there.
On November 11, he was taken to Square Hospital in Dhaka from Max Hospital via helicopter and later to Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore on November 16.
Mohiuddin, a three-time mayor of Chittagong and also the president of Awami League’s Chittagong city unit was suffering from kidney disease, diabetes and several other ailments for a long time.
Badiul Alam, joint general secretary of Chittagong city Awami League and also a long-time associate of Mohiuddin, told the Dhaka Tribune that his namaz-e-janaza was going to be held at the city’s Laldighi Maidan on Friday.
“As far as I know, Mohiuddin might be buried at his family graveyard in the city’s Sheikh Farid Chasma Masjid,” he added.
Mohiuddin’s son and Awami League central leader Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel posted an announcement on Facebook saying the janaza would be held after the Asr prayers at the Laldighi grounds.
Though aware of his ailing condition for some time, the city nevertheless took the demise of its three-time mayor with some grief. A pall of gloom descended on the port city. Despite the late hour, hundreds of Awami League activists and citizens flocked to the hospital and the Chashma Hill residence of Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
City Awami League General Secretary and Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin rushed to the hospital to pay his last respect.
Mohiuddin was born on December 1, 1944 at Gahira Village under Raozan upazila of Chittagong district. He was elected the CCC mayor in 1994, 2000 and 2005.
