Gilas starts SEA Games title defense against tough Thailand
The Gilas Pilipinas 2017 SEA Games team is up next.
Gilas Pilipinas’ journey in the 2017 FIBA-Asia Cup ends Sunday but the fight for the Southeast Asian Games team will only begin as the Philippines opens its title defense in the biennial tournament.
Powered by the best of the cadet crew, Gilas Pilipinas will try to win the country’s 12th straight gold medal and the journey will start with a big game right away as the Philippines takes on Thailand at 9:00 p.m.
The then Sinag Pilipinas got a tough outing against the Thais in the semifinals of the 2015 tournament in Singapore.
Thailand led the Philippines by 11 points at the break before the national team relied on the shooting of Almond Vosotros and the clutch play of Kiefer Ravena to eke out a five-point victory.
Both players return for Gilas in this 2017 edition in Malaysia and joining them are Kobe Paras, Ray Parks, Kevin Ferrer, Baser Amer, Troy Rosario, Raymar Jose, Mike Tolomia, Von Pessumal, and Christian Standhardinger.
Mac Belo is with the team in Kuala Lumpur and Philippine officials are in talks with tournament organizers to have him replace Carl Bryan Cruz who is still in Lebanon for the FIBA-Asia Cup.
