GIUSEPPE FC won two crowns, while Don Bosco Technological Center and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu got one each on the first day of the 5th Sun.Star Football Cup at the Cebu City Sports Center yesterday.

Giuseppe FC added the Mixed 7-Under title in their growing collection after beating Don Bosco A, 1-0, in the finals. Giuseppe, led by eventual MVP Coen Deypalan, finished second in Group 1 with two wins and one loss, while Don Bosco A topped their group with three wins, including a 1-0 win over Giusepppe.

In the semifinal round, Don Bosco A defeated Phoenix Warshockz, 3-1, while Giuseppe FC blanked Don Bosco B, 2-0.

Aside from the MVP, the other members of the Giuseppe team are David Simmeth, Benito Canton, Craig Thompson, Lawrence Gedorio, Marq Dy, Stacy Soria, Peter Heo and Manu Tiongko.

On the other hand, Giuseppe FC added the Girls 15 title after topping the league-type event with six points on two wins and one loss, while Guardian Lady Strikers edged out St. Theresa’s College for second place on goal difference.

After losing their first match against the Guardians Lady Strikers via forfeit, Giuseppe defeated Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 2-0, and STC, 1-0, to finish with six points.

Nicole Badenas was named the MVP and got a savings account from Sun Savings bank along with her certificate. The Giuseppe team, coached by Eleazer Toledo, also had Dominique Nicole Badinas, Roysen Tingcang, Helary Jane Arinque, Pinky Soco, Mishi Tzishe Castanares, Kyza Colina, Melyn Nadera, Argen Mae Garcia, Jean Caryl Cabatingan, Queenie Opuran, Alexa Dinopol, Frea Colina and Nina, Martha and Jexme Torrefiel in the lineup.

After losing in the Mixed Under 7 finals, powerhouse Don Bosco didn’t go home empty-handed with a close 2-1 win over Phoenix Warshocz in the Mixed Under 9 finals, a game that saw both teams score twice under 30 seconds.

Phoenix had possesion during the kick-off and a shot from mid-court went straight to the net. Aldrose Tabar answered with a mid-range effort of his own and leveled the match after connecting from mid-court. He got the game winner a few minutes later with a lovely turn for the 2-1 win.

Don Bosco topped Group 2 with 4 wins, including a 10-0 rout over Samantabhadra, while Phoenix second in Group 1 with two wins and two draws.

In the quarterfinal round, Don Bosco blanked CIS, 4-0, while Warshockz edged Singapore School, 1-0. In the semis, Don Bosco B defeated Don Bosco C, 5-0, while Warschockz beat Don Bosco A, 2-0.

The 5th Sun.Star Football Cup continues today still at the Cebu City Sports Center with games in the Boys 13, Boys 17, Boys 19 and Girls 17 divisions.
