The Ministry of Public Works and Transport held via hybrid mode a nationwide meeting on road safety in eight central and southern provinces in Pakse City, Champassak Province on May 9.

Chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and President of the National Committee on Road Safety Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune, the meeting was attended by Champassak Governor Vilayvong Boutdakham, Minister of Public Works and Transport Ngampasong Meuangmany and members of the Road Safety Committees from Vientiane, Vientiane Province, Borikhamxay, Khammuan, Savannakhet, Champassak, Saravan, Attapeu, Xekong and representatives of relevant authorities.

“Today, the use of vehicles on public roads has increased significantly. In parallel, the annual number of accidents shows an increasing trend, resulting in a rising number of injuries, disabilities, and deaths with damage to public and private property estimated at hundreds of billion kips. Road accident has become a major social ill, a big obstacle restraining national development and a big challenge for the country’s public administration,” said DPM Kikeo Khaykhamphithoune.

“This meeting demonstrates the care, attention and responsibility for road safety of the government and provinces, for the reduction of accidents on public roads, for the protection of people’s lives and private and public property, as well as for the social welfare and for monitoring the implementation of the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 and Action Plan 2021-2025,” he added.

Participants of the meeting were also informed about the inspection of the enforcement of the law on land traffic and related regulations, road accident statistics, emergency aid for road accident victims, first aid equipment, and financial support for road safety activities.

Laos has an ambitious goal of halving the number of deaths and injuries caused by road accidents by 50% by 2030.
