KUALA LUMPUR: MCA has been elected to the Standing Committee of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) for a two-year term.

The party’s election was announced by ICAPP Standing Committee chairman Jose de Venecia Jr during his speech at ICAPP’s ninth general assembly here.

MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, who was also at the assembly, thanked the committee for electing the party.

“I am delighted that we have been elected. We will play an important role in ICAPP to continue our commitment for unity and harmony, and work to further improve the situation in Malaysia,” he said when met on the sidelines of the assembly.

ICAPP was set up in 2000 to promote exchanges and cooperation between political parties in Asia.

The committee comprises leading political parties from more than 20 countries that represent different sub-regions of Asia including Australia, South Korea, China, and Japan.

The committee meets twice a year to organise ICAPP activities and programmes, and apart from MCA, Malaysia is represented in the committee by Umno.

Liow said this was the first time that MCA had been elected to the committee, adding that his party will work together with Umno and other political parties in the committee for the benefit of ICAPP members.

“Under the transformation programme for the MCA, our agenda includes extending our relationship internationally, so we are now working with other political parties in Asean and Asia,” Liow said.

MCA, he said, is currently working closely with political parties not just in Barisan but also from other countries including Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and China.

“We hope this connectivity which we have internationally will further strengthen MCA as well as Barisan Nasional as a whole,” said Liow.
