Netball ACT State League: Irish gun Fiona Morrissey sparks Awarang's finals charge

by August 24, 2017 General

Fiona Morrissey is Arawang’s resident Irish international and she’ll use every bit of her experience to help her side on their run to the State League netball finals.

The veteran goal shooter will be looking to spark a victory when Arawang meet Tuggeranong to round out the Netball ACT regular season at the Lyneham Netball Centre on Friday night.

Morrissey has played netball since the age of seven and says a stint with the Irish national team in Singapore last year will pay huge dividends come finals time.

She missed the first four games of the season due to surgery but now Morrissey is firing and leading the way for her young teammates, some of whom are half her age.

“Having to perform on different stages teaches you a lot and my experience with the Irish national team has helped improve my game and leadership,” Morrissey said.

“Its a big leadership role that I took on this year with a lot of young players and I am double the age of some, it has been a bit of challenge but I think it has worked really well.

“I am the oldest of the team by a fairly long way and I think I bring some stability and mental calmness.”

Morrissey is eyeing a return to the international stage before she retires from netball to let the next generation progress through the ranks.

But first she is eyeing a win over Tuggeranong in a repeat of last year’s grand final to kickstart Arawang’s charge to the title.

Morrissey says her years left as a player “are probably limited” and a State League title would look perfect in the trophy cabinet.

“My goal is to go to Singapore again at the end of this year to meet up with [the Ireland national squad] again,” Morrissey said.

“I think we have continued to build throughout the season and we are feeling pretty good heading into finals.

“It’s always a tough game against Tuggeranong. We aren’t really focusing on who it is, we are trying to stick to our game plan and make sure we are playing the netball we know we can play.”

Friday: Belconnen v Queanbeyan, South Canberra v Canberra, Arawang v Tuggeranong. All games at 9pm.
