MANILA (UPDATE)– The Philippines has withdrawn its hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William Ramirez said Friday the budget for the games’ hosting would instead be used for the rehabilitation of war-torn Marawi City.

In 2015, the Philippines formally announced its hosting of the biennial regional sporting event. It would have been the fourth time for the SEA Games to be staged in the country.

Manila and Davao City were the top choices to hold the international competition.

The last time the Philippines hosted the games was in 2005, when the country emerged as the top-performing nation, amassing 113 gold medals.

In the 2015 games in Singapore, the Philippines settled for sixth place, pocketing only 29 gold medals.
