Pinoy fighter Eduard Folayang gets ONE Championship title shot
Following his win over Adrian Pang, Eduard “Landslide” Folayang gets a shot against Shinya Aoki for the ONE Championship lightweight belt
Following his impressive three-round decision win over Australia’s Adrian Pang just last August 13 in Macau, Filipino mixed martial artist and Team Lakay member Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang finally gets a crack at the ONE Championship Lightweight title when he meets reigning titleholder Shinya Aoki in Singapore on November 12.
““Filipino fight fans have been waiting a long time for this one.” said ONE Championship CEO Victor Cui via an official press release from the MMA promotion. “Eduard Folayang has been with ONE Championship since the beginning and has performed at an extremely high level in his last couple of bouts. He is deserving of a title shot which he earned with victories over Tetsuya Yamada and Adrian Pang.”
Since debuting in ONE Championship’s maiden card way back in 2011, Folayang has amassed a 6-3 professional record, with wins over former champion Koketsu Boku, Vincent Latoel, and as mentioned earlier, Adrian Pang.
Folayang has won four of his last five bouts, and after his win in Macau, the former URCC champion emphatically asked for a title shot, and how he’s getting one.
“I am at the peak of my abilities as a fighter. All the hard work I have put into training has finally started to pay off and I am challenging the great champion Aoki.” Folayang said. “It will be an honor to share the cage with him, but I feel I have the skills to pull off an upset. I will fight for the honor of my country and the people of the Philippines who will be in my corner on fight night.”
He’ll be going up against one of the MMA world’s most feared grapplers though, in Japan’s Aoki.
A veteran of PRIDE, DREAM, Strikeforce, and Bellator, Aoki has faced some of the best lightweights in the world, names like Gilbert Melendez, Tatsuya Kawajiri, and reigning UFC Lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez.
After a successful ONE debut in 2012, captured the ONE lightweight title in 2013, and has defended it twice. The vicious submission specialist also hasn’t lost since joining the ONE banner, putting together a nine-fight winning streak.
““I have been in the sport for many years and have fought the toughest challengers across the world, but this is the first time I will be fighting a strong Filipino warrior.” Aoki said of his new challenger. “I am excited to test my skills against a fighter representing the Philippines. Eduard Folayang is a great competitor with solid all-around skills. It should be an exciting match-up.”
Folayang and Aoki will headline ONE Championship: Defending Honor, set for November 11 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore.
