PSA Corporation Ltd and The Institution of Engineers, Singapore Launch Chartered Engineer Certification Programme for the Port and Marine Sector
To develop engineering talent for the maritime industry, PSA Corporation Ltd and The Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) today launched the Chartered Engineer certification programme for the port and marine sector. Launched by IES in 2013, the Chartered Engineer certification programme is an external validation of an engineer’s experience, expertise and technical competence across various sectors. This collaboration allows port engineers with the requisite experience and training to be conferred a globally recognised and prestigious certification of engineering professionalism.
Regional CEO Southeast Asia, PSA International, Mr Ong Kim Pong and Deputy President, IES, Dr Yeoh Lean Weng presented the certificates for this Chartered Engineer programme to the pioneer batch of 13 engineers from the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, PSA, Jurong Port, Portek International and National University of Singapore. These engineers have passed a rigorous assessment process that looks at their experience and skills in managing complex engineering systems and commitment to developing the skills of others in the engineering profession.
In tandem with the certification, PSA will collaborate with IES to identify relevant skills development programmes for the engineers to enhance their engineering capabilities, to meet the needs of the intelligent port of the future.
Mr Ong Kim Pong, Regional CEO Southeast Asia, PSA International, said, “PSA is delighted to have found in IES a like-minded partner that believes in the professionalisation and development of engineers. This programme will give engineers from PSA and the industry an opportunity to receive internationally recognised validation of their experience, and a respected mark of professional competency. This collaboration will elevate the prestige of engineering careers in the port industry, attracting and retaining the talent needed for the future.”
Dr Yeoh Lean Weng, Deputy President, IES, said, “IES is pleased to launch the Chartered Engineer Certification Programme for the port and marine sector – one of the key contributors to Singapore’s economic growth. The programme’s stringent peer review system and international benchmarking will help to build a strong core of competent engineers to support the development of the Tuas mega port and strengthen Singapore’s position as a leading global maritime hub.”
Mr Jonathan Lee, Assistant Vice President, Pasir Panjang Terminal 1 Engineering, one of the Chartered Engineers appointed today, said, “I appreciate this international recognition as it spurs me on to deepen my professional knowhow, drive innovation and develop new technologies to meet the needs of the future.”
