Singapore haze concern ahead of Formula One night race (dpa German Press Agency)
Singapore (dpa) – A smoky haze blanketing Singapore is being closely
monitored by Formula One officials ahead of the weekend’s grand prix.
High smog levels have led to the cancellation of several outdoor
events, leading to concerns the season’s only Formula One night grand
prix could be affected.
Singapore Grand Prix organizers have said a decision with “the
relative agencies” would be made if “the haze caused visibility,
public health or operational issues.”
The haze, which is also affecting neighbouring Malaysia, has been
caused by farmers in the Indonesian provinces of Sumatra and
Kalimantan burning forests to clear land for agriculture.
The National Environment Agency’s Pollutant Standards Index (PSI)
was between 129 and 155 over a 24-hour period to Tuesday afternoon,
above an “unhealthy” classification which begins at 101.
Practice for Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix begins Friday.
