Singapore PM Expresses Condolences To US President

SINGAPORE, Aug 23 (Bernama) — Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has written to United States (US) President Donald J. Trump to convey his condolences on the demise of US sailors following a collision involving the USS John S McCain, the guided-missile destroyer.

“I was deeply saddened by the loss of lives following the collision between the United States Navy destroyer, the USS John S McCain, and a merchant vessel east of Singapore on Aug 21, 2017,” he said in his condolence letter which was made available to Bernama here.

“On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I offer my condolences to the victims and their loved ones. We will continue to do our utmost in the search and rescue operations and assist the injured sailors in their recovery,” he said.

The collision with Alnic MC, a Liberian-flagged 600-foot oil and chemical tanker with a gross tonnage of 30,000, had caused five of the warship crew members injured and 10 were missing.

On Tuesday, US Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Scott Swift said some remains had been found and one was located by the Royal Malaysian Navy…..
