“It’s an abang [big brother] attitude towards us. It has not changed since we became independent,” the prime minister said, as reported by Channel News Asia.
Lee noted the robust relationship he has with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, saying the two meet regularly to discuss trade, investment and the haze problem.
Lee, who has held the post of prime minister since Goh Chok Tong stepped aside in 2004, also hinted that a new prime minister may take over after the next election, tipped for 2020.
The speech took a dramatic turn when the 64-year-old prime minister was briefly forced from the podium by sudden illness, blamed on dehydration and overheating. He will take leave for the rest of the week on doctors’ advice, Reuters reported.
