Tietjens: Beating the Fijians will be tough

by April 15, 2016 General

MASTER tactician Sir Gordon Tietjens says beating the Fijians would be a tough task.

In an interview with Times Sport in Singapore yesterday, Tietjens said the Ben Ryan-coached team has the depth and the class compared with any other team in the world.

“I would say the Fiji 7s team are putting more depth than other country in the world in terms of 7s players’ their knowledge and expertise,” he said.

“They are a very tough team to beat and they now lead in the series as we stand right now,” he said.

Tietjens confirmed the side would miss the services of their experienced skipper DJ Forbes this weekend with All Blacks flanker Liam Messam being selected to lead the team this weekend.

“I have lost three skippers in Mikkelson, DJ Forbes and Scott Curry but Messam is there to take over, he is a great All Black just like Sonny Bill Williams and we will give our best

“Every player has to step up; it’s about playing for each other.”

New Zealand will face USA, France and Canada in their pool games and Tietjens believe all games would be tough.

“Sevens has grown globally since it’s an Olympic sport and there are no more easy games now,” he added.

The All Blacks are on second spot behind Fiji on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series points table.
