Who else will Manchester United sign this summer? Five Manchester United transfers that could still happen
However United manager Jose Mourinho is still lacking in certain positions.
The Red Devils are still in desperate need of a defensive midfielder after unsuccessfully attempting to sign Eric Dier from Tottenham.
Mourinho has said “The problem is we have four players (Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo) that cannot play football now, not even training.”
Therefore there is all the more reason for United to sign new players in order too compensate for absentees and improve squad depth.
So here’s five potential Man United transfers that could still happen…
1. Nemanja Matic
After being blocked from signing Dier, the search for a defensive midfielder continues at United.
Serbian international Matic has been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford since ex-Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho took over last year.
The transfer now looks more likely than ever as Chelsea have left Matic out of their 25 man squad as they jet off to China for their pre-season tour.
Chelsea manager Antonio Conte also appears to making preparations for Matic’s departure through the signing of a new defensive midfielder, Tiemoue Bakayoko.
The one potential hitch in the move is the Blues resistance to dealing with rivals United – after they pipped them to Lukaku.
2. Marco Verratti
Paris Saint Germain man Verratti has often been linked with Barcelona in recent months who are understood to hold a long-term admiration for the Italian midfielder.
However after sacking his agent and hiring Mino Raiola, it has been immediately suggested that Raiola may negotiate a transfer to United following his recent business with the club which includes Ibrahimovic, Paul Pogba, Lukaku and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
Mourinho would most likely look to use Verratti as a central midfielder as there is already an abundance of players to fill the No.10 role at United.
3. Ross Barkley
Mourinho is understood to have long admired Everton midfielder Barkley.
United chairman Ed Woodward has reportedly been asked to get the ground work in to make an end of window bid for the England ace.
However, Everton’s price tag of £50m would be unrealistic for United, if the price drops to below £20m it could persuade Mourinho to sign the 23 year old.
4. Serge Aurier
Having found difficulty in signing Monaco’s Fabinho, United manager Mourinho has turned his attention to the Ivorian international.
His position is one of three Mourinho wants to strengthen along with a defensive midfielder and a winger.
The 24 year old would prove cheaper that Fabinho as he could feasibly be signed for £25m from PSG.
5. Ivan Perisic
There has been ongoing speculation about a potential move to United by the Croatia international.
United have already had a £39.5m bid rejected by Inter.
The Serie A club want £48m for the winger – and have taken him on their pre-season tour of China and Singapore.
