Hundreds of Foreign Nationals Missing in Wake of Nepal-Tibet Landslides

Kathmandu: Flash floods and landslides across the Himalayan border region of Nepal and China's autonomous region of Tibet have resulted in the deaths of at least 780 people, with more than 2,500 individuals, including several hundred tourists, still missing. The casualty toll is expected to increase as rescue operations continue. According to France24.com, Nepal's disaster agency reported on Sunday that the number of people missing on its side of the border has risen to 2,502. In Tibet, 546 individuals are currently unaccounted for, with sixteen confirmed dead, as reported by China's Xinhua news agency. The figures are anticipated to change as rescue efforts proceed amidst the chaos following this major disaster. The Nepal disaster agency revealed that 598 foreigners, a mix of tourists and foreign workers, are among the missing. Chinese officials noted that 261 foreigners are unaccounted for on their end. The Nepal Tourism Board reported that 149 Nepali tourists are among the 622 missing, although the disas ter agency lists a slightly lower number, at 127. The number of unaccounted Nepali residents is believed to be in the hundreds. China's foreign ministry indicated that nearly 100 Chinese nationals are missing in Nepal. Meanwhile, the Nepal Tourism Board stated that eight Chinese are missing but confirmed the rescue of 16 others. As per Chinese state media, 16 deaths have been confirmed in Tibet, with 546 people still missing. The situation has affected people from various countries. The United States reported around 85 citizens missing, with nine evacuated. The State Department remains committed to the rescue efforts despite the challenges posed by the remote location. The numbers of missing individuals from other countries include 61 Ukrainians, 41 Australians, 33 from the United Kingdom, and 29 from Latvia, among others. The Nepal Tourism Board has provided detailed figures for missing nationals from countries worldwide, highlighting the disaster's extensive international impact. As rescue operations con tinue, the global community remains vigilant, hoping for the safe recovery of those still missing.
