Over 480,000 Revellers Recorded on First Day of Wat Phnom Sankranta

Phnom Penh: The historic Wat Phnom and Walk Street came alive as more than 480,000 revellers gathered to ring in the Khmer New Year 2025, marking the first day of the three-day Wat Phnom Sankranta 2025.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Ms. Dor Samphors, Deputy Director of the Phnom Penh Municipal Administration and spokesperson for the City Hall, reported that around 430,000 national and international visitors flocked to the Wat Phnom historical site alone, while about 50,000 visited the Walk Street area.

The event, officially opened by H.E. Khuong Sreng, Governor of Phnom Penh, and his spouse, features traditional ceremonies, cultural performances, traditional folk games, and lively water splashing and powder-smearing activities.

Despite rainy weather, the celebrations remained energetic, with over 600,000 attendees recorded from April 12-14.

Wat Phnom Sankranta, running from April 14-16, honours the Year of the Snake with: Religious rituals; welcoming the New Year's angel; Cultural shows promoting Khmer traditions; Family-friendly entertainment for locals and tourists.

Authorities ensured tight security and efficient crowd management, allowing attendees to enjoy the festivities safely.

With two more days of celebrations, even larger crowds are expected.
