Kuala lumpur: Samdech Maha Rathasapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of the Kingdom of Cambodia, met with H.E. Javier Ignacio Maroto Aranz¡bal, Deputy Speaker of the Senate of Spain, during the 46th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) in Kuala Lumpur.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed her gratitude towards Spain for its ongoing support in the social and economic sectors of Cambodia, as well as its role in promoting peace, democracy, and good governance. She noted the robust growth in Cambodia-Spain relations, highlighting advancements in bilateral trade and Spain’s significance as a major market for Cambodian rice exports to the European Union.
Samdech Khuon Sudary welcomed Spain’s interest in becoming a parliamentary observer of AIPA, believing that such participation would further enhance the relationship between Spain, AIPA, and ASEAN. She pointed out that Spain, being a key member of the European Union, has the potential to significantly contribute to strengthening ASEAN-EU cooperation, which is vital for promoting global peace, stability, and good governance.
Addressing regional matters, Samdech Khuon Sudary discussed the underlying causes of the Cambodia-Thailand border conflict. She underscored the importance of bilateral mechanisms in resolving disputes and suggested that if these mechanisms fail, the International Court of Justice should be utilized for adjudication. She reiterated Cambodia’s commitment to peace, dispute resolution through peaceful means, and adherence to the ASEAN Charter, the Charter of the United Nations, and international law.
In response, H.E. Javier Ignacio Maroto Aranz¡bal promised to relay the concerns and insights to the President of the Spanish Senate. He reassured that Spain would continue to monitor the situation closely and would do its utmost to support peace and stability between the two neighboring countries.
