Phnom Penh: H.E. HEM Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation, on Mar. 11 received a delegation from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Japan Environmental Management Association for Industry (JEMAI) to discuss leveraging Japan’s decades of experience and expertise in industrial management to support Cambodia’s sustainable industrial development.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Science, Technology and Innovation, during the meeting, Mr. HAMASAKA Takashi, Director of the Environmental Management Promotion Office at METI, emphasised Japan’s rapid industrialisation in the 1950s and 1960s, which raised significant pollution concerns. In response, the Japanese government forged an active partnership with the private sector to develop pollution control technologies and implement regulatory measures while promoting sustainable industrial development.
He cited the establishment of dedicated pollution management units in factories since 1971 and underlined the importance of integrating Cambodian enterprises into global supply chains by meeting international sustainability standards.
H.E. Minister welcomed Japan’s insights, noting Cambodia’s own economic growth and urbanisation trends that present both opportunities and environmental challenges. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to attracting investment while strengthening environmental, social, and governance (ESG) safeguards.
Stressing a balanced approach, he called for practical regulations tailored to Cambodia’s context and emphasised education and support for businesses rather than punitive measures.
Mr. HAMASAKA assured that JEMAI would support Cambodia’s pollution management efforts, fostering an industrial sector that aligns with sustainable development goals.
