Geneva: Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary, President of the National Assembly of Cambodia, addressed the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament on July 30, emphasizing the need for inclusive multilateralism and enhanced parliamentary cooperation amid rising global instability.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, Samdech Khuon Sudary expressed appreciation for the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s efforts in organizing the forum and called for “trust-based, people-centered, and result-oriented international cooperation.” She highlighted the challenges facing the global community, warning of the dangers of inaction in a world characterized by uncertainty and complexity.
She voiced concern over the erosion of global leadership and international norms, noting that global governance is in crisis with multilateralism under strain and ongoing violations of international law. She pointed out the disproportionate impact on women and children and stressed the urgency of defending the UN Charter and promoting open multilateralism.
Samdech Khuon Sudary underscored the relevance of parliamentary diplomacy in shaping a fragmented multipolar world order. From the perspective of a small state, she affirmed Cambodia’s reliance on international law to protect its sovereignty.
She commended Malaysia’s role in mediating a ceasefire agreement, expressing gratitude to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his leadership and to President Donald Trump for co-organizing the meeting with China’s participation. She thanked international friends for supporting the ceasefire, which preserved lives and livelihoods.
Advocating for accountability, she called for international monitoring to ensure the ceasefire is honored and for deploying observers to prevent breaches. She emphasized the importance of holding violators accountable to maintain fairness and justice.
Addressing regional dynamics, she cautioned against adding to global conflicts and reaffirmed Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and good neighborliness within ASEAN. In conclusion, she stressed the importance of upholding international law and peaceful coexistence.
