The Council of Ministers has okayed the submission of Cambodia’s draft law to ratify an amendment of the Marrakesh Agreement of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on fisheries conservation for the country’s legislative bodies’ review.
The plenary session of the Council of Ministers chaired by Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet on Feb. 2 endorsed the submission.
The draft law aims to contribute to promoting sustainable marine fisheries resources nationally and internationally as a member state of the WTO.
The measures include the banning of harmful sea fishing, which is a major factor in the destruction of global marine fisheries stocks.
As a WTO member, Cambodia’s ratification of the agreement demonstrates the country’s willingness to cooperate with the international community in eliminating unregulated illegal fishing and preventing overfishing.
In return, Cambodia will receive technical and financial support to strengthen its maritime fisheries management and conservation
capacity.
At the same meeting, the Council of Ministers also approved the progress report and direction of the development of the framework for monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the Pentagonal Strategy-Phase 1, the draft law on water transport to maintain order and ensure safety and security of water transport, the draft sub-decree on the amendment to the sub-decree on the organisation and functioning of the Cambodia Tourism Marketing and Promotion Board, and the draft sub-decree on the organisation and functioning of the Secretary of State for Border Affairs
