“Khmer Traditional Skirt” Gala Programme Successfully Held

The three-day ‘Khmer Traditional Skirt (Sampot)’ Gala programme was successfully wrapped up on Mar. 3, attracting the interest of both locals and foreigners.

Organised by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts at Chaktomuk Theatre in Phnom Penh, the event is aimed to contribute not only to the preservation of Khmer ancient tradition, but also to the promotion of the value of Khmer Sampot nationally and internationally.

Addressing the opening ceremony on Mar. 1, Samdech Kitti Sanghahapundit Men Sam An, a Member of the Supreme Privy Council to His Majesty the King, said the “Khmer Traditional Skirt” is a very meaningful and important programme for the Cambodian younger generations to increase their knowledge, especially to better understand the history as well as the value of Khmer traditional clothes, which are the most dignified and the oldest in the land of Sovannaphumi.

Moreover, Samdech Men Sam An encouraged fashion designers to pay attention to the value of clothes used by Cambodians by not designing t
oo much, which may look inappropriate, while Cambodian clothes look mature, gentle and dignified.

At the same time, a handicraft exhibition – ‘Our handicraft exhibition’ – was also held with the participation of many types of Cambodian handicraft products.
