Singapore to Sanction Israeli Settlers and Support Palestinian Statehood

Accra: Singapore has announced plans to impose targeted sanctions on leaders of illegal Israeli settler groups and has expressed readiness to recognize a Palestinian state when the conditions are right.

According to TRTworld.com, Singapore’s Foreign Minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, addressed the nation’s parliament on Monday, emphasizing Singapore’s opposition to Israel’s settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. He highlighted concerns that projects like the E1 plan could fragment occupied Palestinian territories and undermine the prospects for a two-state solution. Balakrishnan urged the Israeli government to halt settlement construction and expansion, stressing the need for a negotiated settlement that would lead to two states, allowing both Israeli and Palestinian peoples to coexist in peace, security, and dignity.

The international community largely views Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank as illegal under international law. However, Israel disputes this, citing historical and biblical ties and asserting that the settlements contribute to its security. Despite Singapore’s historically close diplomatic and military ties with Israel, the city-state has shown a shift in tone. In 2024, Singapore supported multiple UN resolutions advocating for the recognition of a Palestinian state, reflecting a growing global frustration with settlement violence and the lack of progress in peace talks.
