The National Standards Council (NSC) held its 28th Meeting on July 15 under the chairmanship of H.E. HEM Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation and Chairman of the NSC.
The meeting focused on the crucial role of national standards in boosting Cambodia’s exports and global trade competitiveness, said the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI).
Stressing the commitment of the Royal Government of the 7th mandate to developing Cambodia Standards (CS), Minister Vanndy said, “National standards are of utmost importance for promoting exports through improved quality, production and productivity. Some businesses may still perceive standards as burdensome. So, the Council’s mission is to develop as many strategic national standards as possible to support Cambodian products.”
He encouraged each sectoral committee to set targets for standards development, emphasising the need to prioritise and sequence them according to the economic needs of the sector. “We pro
duce a lot, but without standards, our market remains narrow,” he added.
Minister Vanndy also suggested that NSC review and improve existing standards, especially those adopted from international frameworks that may not be fully applicable to the Cambodian context.
In addition to discussing the internal rules, processes for standards development, and NSC’s achievements in 2023, the meeting adopted the draft Cambodia Standard for Rice Liquor. This highlights the Council’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality and marketability of Cambodian products.
As he acknowledged the efforts of the National Institute of Standards as the coordinating body for standards in Cambodia, Minister Vanndy stressed the collaborative framework of the NSC, which involves various sectoral committees. “Our growth in national standards development relies on the contributions of these committees,” he said.
The 28th meeting of the NSC underscored the government’s strategic focus on creating a comprehensive and supportive framework fo
r standardisation to drive Cambodia’s growth in both domestic and international markets.
