Australia Helps Strengthen Laboratory Capacity for Infectious Diseases in Cambodia

Australia has supported the IndoPacLab programme across Cambodia, Laos, and Papua New Guinea (PNG) to strengthen laboratory capacity for HIV, TB, malaria, and COVID-19 testing, said the Australian Embassy in Cambodia in a news release this morning.

A tri-country forum on IndoPacLab was held in Phnom Penh recently, where stakeholders from Cambodia, Laos, and PNG experienced and reflected on sustainability and national leadership, it added.

In Cambodia, the programme, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, has dramatically reduced the turnaround time for HIV testing for pregnant women and exposed infants from over two weeks to approximately five hours, the source underlined.

Following a successful pilot programme supported by Australia through IndoPacLab under The Global Fund, Cambodia will roll out new testing methods nationwide to reduce HIV testing turnaround time for pregnant women and infants to enable same-day results.
