Cambodia Records 5th Dolphin Calf This Year

Research team from Kratie and Stung Treng Fisheries Cantonments and WWF have recorded another dolphin calf in Anlong Kampi pool located in Kampi village, Sambok commune, Chetr Borei district, Kratie province.

The newborn dolphin was spotted on July 7, at around 11:30 am, swimming along with nine other adult dolphins, said the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in a news release.

The dolphin is estimated to be about ten days old, said MAFF, stressing that this is the fifth dolphin calf registered in 2023.

Last year, six dolphin calves were counted, the same number as in 2021.

The Mekong’s Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List.
