Phnom Penh: French President H.E. Emmanuel Macron has conveyed France’s willingness to aid in resolving the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute by providing necessary documentation to both governments.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the announcement was made by H.E. Jean-François Tan, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister, during a press briefing at Phnom Penh International Airport. This statement followed the return of a high-ranking Cambodian delegation, which included Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet and First Lady Lok Chumteav Dr. Pich Chanmony, from the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France.
H.E. Jean-François Tan emphasized that the Cambodian Prime Minister brought up the border issue with the French President solely for clarification purposes regarding Cambodia’s stance, with no intent of political maneuvering. He outlined Cambodia’s position on the dispute, which includes maintaining peaceful and cooperative relations with Thailand, submitting the c
ases of Ta Moan Thom, Ta Moan Tauch, Ta Krabey temple complexes, and the Mom Bei area to the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and continuing joint efforts with Thailand on border demarcation through mechanisms like the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC). Additionally, strengthening bilateral relations with Thailand remains a priority.
The border tensions between Cambodia and Thailand escalated following an incident on May 28, 2025, when Thai military forces fired upon a Cambodian army post in Techo Morokot village, Preah Vihear province, resulting in the death of a Cambodian soldier. This location has long been recognized as a Cambodian military position.
