The Post-Harvest Fisheries Development Project (CAPFISH-Capture) is contributing to the development of the fisheries product value chain for export.
The move was shared by H.E. Ms. Im Rachna, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson at the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, in a recent study visit, adding that Cambodia is focusing on its fisheries products for domestic supply and export to neighbouring countries, China, the US, and the EU.
Enterprises certified by the Cambodia Quality Seal (CQS) have a better market with a high price of production, pointed out the undersecretary of state.
Mr. Brayan Fornari, the Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Cambodia, reaffirmed that the EU will work with Cambodia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries to provide both technical and specialised support for the export of Cambodia’s fisheries products to the EU.
With the export to the EU, there is also a need for procedures, technical conditions, and recognition from both countries’
authorities, he added.
According to Dr. Shetty Seetharama Thombathu, Chief Technical Advisor for UNIDO’s CAPFISH-Capture project, the organisation is funded by the EU to strengthen the technical capacity and sustainability of competent authorities and the private sector and promote the competitiveness of fisheries production.
Cambodia’s fishing communities have about 1.5 million people, including 1,395,000 freshwater fishers and 105,000 sea fishers.
To date, there are a total of 516 fishing communities in Cambodia, of which 475 are located on land and 41 along the beaches.
