Christchurch plane-spotters await A380

by October 30, 2016 General

Christchurch Airport is opening a special viewing area for people to watch the first arrival of a scheduled A380 aircraft at the airport.

Hundreds of people will have the chance to park up to witness the landing 1:45pm today from a grassed area opposite the main runway.

“We’ll open ‘plane-spotters’ park’ at 11am and close it after the double-decker aircraft departs at 6:45pm,” says the airport’s chief aeronautical and commercial officer, Justin Watson.

Two roads people sometimes park on near the terminal will be closed.

Currently Emirates and Singapore Airlines fly A380s into Auckland.

Christchurch Airport is seeing record international visitor arrival growth and the daily schedule using A380s will help to grow this further.

The number of long-haul international visitors at the airport last financial year grew 15 percent year-on-year.

Holiday arrivals from Australia are now also growing strongly, with our 18 percent increase in July being the highest of any New Zealand airport.
