(Olympics) Young pentathlete eyes gold in ’28 after historic bronze in Paris

Seong Seung-min made Olympic history at the tender age of 21 on Sunday, as she became the first Asian woman to win a modern pentathlon medal. Seong took home the bronze medal in Versailles, west of Paris, behind Michelle Gulyas of Hungary and Elodie Clouvel of France. The women's competition made its Olympic debut in 2000 and had been dominated by Europeans. Before Seong, there had been just three non-European medalists -- one each from the United States, Brazil and Australia. And with her prime years still ahead, Seong said she is determined to make even more history. "I still think I have room to grow," Seong said, while cradling her bronze medal. "My next goal is to go for the gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics in four years. I am not going to be complacent, and I will try to keep improving." This has been a breakout season for Seong. Two months ago, Seong captured her first career world title, which elevated her to the status of a legitimate medal threat for Paris. She delivered on that promise by winning bronze. "I still can't believe I've won this medal. I am so happy," Seong said. "I love the feeling of this medal in my hands. I won't ever forget this." Seong was in third place after the day's first three events: equestrian show jumping, fencing and freestyle swimming. In the laser run, which combines running and shooting, Seong fell back of Gulyas early with some shooting woes. Seong also said she was running on fumes down the stretch. "I was so exhausted after crossing the line, and I could barely celebrate," Seong said. "I thought maybe I should have trained harder, but I don't have regrets." Seong scored a perfect 300 points in show jumping, an event that had given her trouble in earlier competitions. And this was the last Olympic competition with horse riding. For 2028, obstacle racing will replace show jumping. "As athletes, we have to adjust to changes," Seong said. "I'll do my best in the new event, too." Source: Yonhap News Agency
