Over 5 Tonnes of Illicit Drugs Burned

More than five tonnes of narcotics and chemical substances were burned in a ceremony held here at Koh Pich Convention and Exhibition Centre in Phnom Penh this morning to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June 26).

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng presided over the annual celebration organised this year under the theme “People first: stop stigma and discrimination, strengthen prevention.”

Addressing the function, Samdech Sar Kheng reaffirmed the Royal Government of Cambodia’s firm commitment and efforts to prevent and crack down on all offenses and drug-related crimes.

The celebration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2023 aims to focus more attention to people or treat people as a basis for policy making, strategic planning, action plan elaboration and other measures related to the fight against illicit drugs.

At the same time, it is necessary to consider the negative effects of discrimination and stigma against drug addicts, as well as to further strengthen educational and outreach activities.

In addition, this year’s theme is to encourage the empowerment of local authorities and youth to take the lead in the fight against illicit drugs in their local communities.
