Singapore 2015 ASEAN ParaGames wheelchair 100m gold medallist Van Vun (pictured, Mike Hodgkinson) is set to finally achieve his dream of competing at a Paralympics as he jets off to Rio today.

A veteran of three ASEAN ParaGames, a registration dispute denied Vun the chance to represent Cambodia at the 2012 London Paralympics.

The Kandal native contracted polio when he was 3 and was left needing the use of a wheelchair.

Now 30, and also the holder of two silver medals from the 2011 ASEAN ParaGames in Indonesia, he at last has the opportunity to add a Paralympic 100m medal to his regional haul as Cambodia’s sole participant at Rio.

After learning of missing out on London, Vun said: “I am very disappointed, but I will keep trying. I want to win a gold medal abroad. I have promised this to my family.”

At Rio, and carrying the Kingdom’s Paralympic hopes with him, he now has the chance to keep that promise.
