Turkish Embassy Marks July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day in Phnom Penh

The Turkish Embassy in Phnom Penh organised here today a commemorative ceremony to mark the eighth anniversary of the coup attempt of July 15, 2016. Turkish Ambassador to the Kingdom of Cambodia H.E. Ms. Ülk Kocaefe, in her speech, emphasised the importance of maintaining and strengthening national unity, especially at challenging times. She stated that it was with the spirit of national unity, the bravery of the Turkish nation and their heroic resistance that defeated the coup attempt. 'Trkiye's fight against Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETÖ) who organised the attempted coup is going on both at home and abroad. We explain to our counterparts that FETÖ is not only a terrorist organisation but also an espionage organisation with a cult character, and emphasise that it poses a serious threat to all countries and their citizens in which it operates,' she continued. H.E. Ambassador thanked the Cambodian authorities for not allowing any FETO activity in the Kingdom and for their cooperation and support th ey have rendered Trkiye in its fight against terrorism. According to the embassy, on July 15, 2016, the Fetullah Terrorist Organisation (FETÖ) ringleader Fetullah Glen orchestrated a failed coup, which left 251 people dead and 2,734 injured. FETO attempted to overthrow the democratically elected government through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary and plotted to assassinate the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Standing against the threat, the Turkish people courageously showed the world that they would not tolerate any attempt to thwart their will as expressed through their democratically elected government.
