UN Under-Secretary-General Appreciates Good and Rapid Development of Cambodia


Visiting Under-Secretary-General of UN for Legal Affairs and United Nations Legal Counsel H.E. Miguel de Serpa Soares has expressed his appreciation for the good cooperation between the United Nations and the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) in the successful process of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC).

In his courtesy call on Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, at the Peace Palace here this afternoon, H.E. Miguel de Serpa Soares also reaffirmed the UN’s continued cooperation with the RGC in completing the Residual Functions of the ECCC.

Besides, the UN under-secretary-general noticed the good and rapid development of Cambodia compared to his first visit to the Kingdom in 2013.

For his part, Samdech Thipadei Prime Minister thanked the UN for its support for the successful operation of the ECCC in the past 16 years.

In addition, the Premier stated that the trial of the Cambodian genocidal regime is not yet over, but must continue
some work for the benefit of the Cambodian people in the future as well as for the whole world.

In this regard, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet informed his guest that the RGC will set up an appropriate mechanism to maintain and store more than 2.4 million case files in three languages (Khmer, French and English) to be a human treasure for the whole world and for the next generation to learn about genocide and avoid the genocide that may happen in the world.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also stressed that peace is a key and invaluable factor in promoting the national development in all fields. In this sense, for the whole world to be at peace, we must all work together to avoid any possible wars and conflicts.
