Violet queen’s crepe-myrtle flowers capture Hanoians’ hearts

General

In early summer, which usually falls on May each year, bang lang flowers, also known as queen’s crepe-myrtle flowers (Lagerstroemia speciosa), explode with violet and lavender petals throughout Vietnam, signalling the beginning of summer. This year, the flowers bloom instantaneously and all trees seem to blossom at the same time in Hanoi, giving harmonious purple shades through all the capital’s main streets. Hanoians enjoy this year’s summer with cool weather and the poetic beauty of the purple flowers blooming on top of dark green leaves.
