30 Lakh Taxpayers Submit E-Returns in Current Tax Year

Dhaka: Over 30 lakh taxpayers have so far submitted e-returns in the current tax year. According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, more than 30 lakh taxpayers have filed e-returns in the current tax year till today, as stated in a press release by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

Through a special order, the NBR has mandated online e-return filing for all taxpayers, with exceptions for senior taxpayers aged 65 and above, individuals who are physically challenged or have special needs, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, and legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers. The online e-return filing process for the tax year 2025-26 was inaugurated by Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed on August 4 through the website.

So far, around 45 lakh taxpayers have registered in the e-return system, with over 30 lakh having filed e-returns for the tax year 2025-26. This includes individuals for whom e-return filing is not mandatory, yet they are participating in the online process. Monthly figures indicate that 251,784 taxpayers submitted e-returns in August, 301,302 in September, 454,076 in October, 1,040,472 in November, and approximately 10 lakh in December.

In comparison, during the same period last year, only 102,298 taxpayers filed e-returns. To facilitate taxpayers, the government has extended the return filing deadline to January 31, 2026. The NBR is optimistic that the number of e-returns filed will exceed 40 lakh within the extended period.

Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad can also file e-returns online by providing necessary information such as passport number and national identity card number to the designated email. Additionally, their authorized representatives can file e-returns on their behalf. The e-return system allows taxpayers to submit their income, expenses, assets, and liabilities without uploading any documents. Tax payments can be made online, and an automatic e-return filing acknowledgment is generated immediately.

If any errors are found in the submitted e-return, taxpayers have the option to file a revised return within 180 days. Currently, about 30,000 taxpayers have filed revised returns for the tax year 2025-26. To simplify the e-return filing process, the NBR has provided training to taxpayers and their authorized representatives, including professionals like income tax lawyers and accountants.

For assistance, taxpayers can contact the NBR call center or access the e-tax service option online. E-return help-desks in all tax regions offer additional support and advice. The NBR urges all individual taxpayers to file their income tax returns for the fiscal year 2025-2026 by January 31, 2026, using the e-return system.
