Khaleda Zia to be Laid to Rest Beside Husband Ziaur Rahman’s Grave

Dhaka: BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, known for her leadership in Bangladesh's democratic journey, is set to be laid to rest beside her husband, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, following her namaz-e-janaza today. The funeral prayer is scheduled at Manik Mia Avenue around 2 pm after Johr prayers, as confirmed by BNP sources. Her body was transported to her son Tarique Rahman's residence in Gulshan for family and relatives to pay their last respects.

According to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the national flag-draped mortuary van carried her body to the residence, adjacent to her own home, Firoza, with state protocol at 09:15 am. Tarique Rahman and family members engaged in Quran recitation and prayers for her soul. The van departed Evercare Hospital at 8:53 am with tight security, and thousands of law enforcement personnel deployed for the event.

Since morning, a large gathering of people, BNP leaders, and supporters amassed in front of her residence to bid farewell. Security measures are in place for public participation in the janaza and to pay last tributes without disruption. Arrangements are made for the public to line the surrounding roads of Manik Mia Avenue.

Post-janaza, Khaleda Zia will receive a state burial beside Ziaur Rahman at 3:30 pm. The ceremony will see attendance from her family, state dignitaries, foreign guests, ambassadors, and BNP leaders. Access will be restricted to designated individuals to ensure a smooth burial process. Public access to Zia Udyan will be limited until the process concludes.

Her passing has cast a shadow over the nation, prompting a three-day state mourning and a one-day national holiday. The national flag is at half-mast, and special prayers are being held across religious venues. BNP is observing a seven-day mourning period with black flags at party offices and prayers being conducted at each office.
