Bangkok: A grand opening ceremony for "The Radiant Light of Faith," a nationwide New Year's Eve prayer event, aims to bring blessings and good fortune to His Majesty the King while welcoming the new year 2026. The event, which runs until January 4th, 2026, was launched by the Department of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Culture, in collaboration with Wat Saket. It serves as an auspicious occasion for offering merit to His Majesty the King. The event was presided over by Phra Phromsithi (Thongchai Sukyano), a member of the Supreme Sangha Council and Abbot of Wat Saket.
According to Thai News Agency, the ceremony was led by Mr. Chaiyaphon Suk-iam, Director-General of the Department of Religious Affairs. He represented both the monastic and lay sides, with participation from Buddhist followers, the general public, government agencies, private sector representatives, and media. The event took place at several key locations, including the Bamiyan Caves, the entrance to Wat Saket (Golden Mountain), and Sala Bamphong Kuson 2 in the Pom Prap Sattru Phai District of Bangkok.
Mr. Chaiyapol Suk-iam explained that the "Shining Light of Faith" event aims to promote and preserve Buddhism, providing a platform for public participation in religious ceremonies to foster mindfulness and wisdom. The event features performances such as "Four-Directional Lights" and "Light of Faith Illuminating the Sky," which includes a fire-breathing dragon and a water-spouting Naga. A grand ceremony will unveil the eyes of auspicious animals, illuminating Wat Phra Chetuphon (Wat Pho) with one million lights. The event will run from December 30, 2025, to January 4, 2026.
The Director-General further noted that the Department of Religious Affairs, alongside government and private sector agencies, is organizing a "New Year's Eve Prayer Ceremony for Auspiciousness Nationwide," which aims to offer merit to the Royal Family and encourage people to reduce vices during the New Year. This initiative hopes to strengthen the public's mind through Buddhist teachings, bringing auspiciousness to individuals and the nation.
The public is encouraged to participate in various activities, such as paying homage to Buddha's relics and joining the "Walk Rally to Pay Homage to 9 Auspicious Sites" within Wat Saket. This event blends religious activities with cultural tourism, offering participants the chance to absorb historical values, art, and teachings. A cultural market featuring regional foods, desserts, and products from over 200 shops will also be held, enhancing the festive atmosphere and stimulating local economic activity.
